Large-format tile (any tile with one side 15 inches or longer) is one of the most popular choices for modern homes. Fewer grout lines make rooms look bigger and cleaner. But big tiles come with big requirements.
1. Your floor must be flat
A small dip that a 12×12 tile would hide becomes a visible edge with a 24×48 tile. Professional installers check the floor with a laser and flatten it with self-leveling underlayment where needed.
2. Lippage is the enemy
Lippage is when one tile edge sits higher than its neighbor. Tile leveling clips on every joint keep the surface perfectly even.
3. Full mortar coverage matters
Large tiles need large-format mortar, the right trowel and back-buttering so there are no hollow spots. Hollow spots crack under weight over time.
4. Plan the layout
With fewer, bigger pieces, every cut is visible. A good installer plans where the cuts fall so doorways and focal walls look balanced.
5. Budget for the right crew
Large tiles are heavy and require special tools to handle and cut. Installation costs a bit more than standard tile, and it is worth it for a floor that looks perfect for decades.
